It has only been a few days since Iron Gate Studios’ Valheim released for Early Access, but players have been busy uncovering all the game has to offer. With Valheim being Steam’s top-selling game this week, many players are now wondering if the game will be released on any consoles, whether PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch.

My fiance and I play alot of coop together but she has one rule: It has to support her xbox controller she hates playing kb/m. Valheim is a brutal exploration and survival game for 1-10 players, set in a procedurally-generated purgatory inspired by viking culture. It's available in Steam Early Access, developed by Iron Gate and published. Thus, if you’re looking for more pure cooperative experiences, then look no further. Here’s a list of 21 cooperative survival games just like Valheim. Grounded – PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X. A departure from Obsidian’s usual narrative-heavy, single-player RPGs, Grounded is basically Honey, I Shrunk the Kids: The Video Game.

Valheim is the newest game in the survival genre, and features heavy Viking and Nordic inspiration. Iron Gate Studios, the indie Sweden-based developers, wanted to create a unique looking game by merging low-resolution graphics with modern game techniques. Players are able to explore a procedurally-generated purgatory while crafting, sailing, battling enemies, and building new things along the way.

According to the FAQ page on Valheim’s website, there are “no plans to release on other platforms” at the moment, such as the PS5 or Xbox Series X. However, Iron Gate also said it wouldn’t rule out making versions for consoles. In the same response it said a Mac-version could be released if there was significant demand for it, so it’s probable that Iron Gate is taking the same approach when it comes to consoles.

Thankfully, if Iron Gate wanted to bring Valheim to consoles, the odds are in its favor. Valheim has some low technical requirements, and takes up about 1GB of space, so the game likely wouldn’t strain console hardware, even on the Nintendo Switch. Plus, the game’s publisher, Coffee Stain Publishing, already has experience bringing games to consoles. The publisher's Goat Simulator and Sanctum 2 were released on consoles, such at the PS3, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

The survival genre of games has a big fanbase, and often these titles will be ported to consoles to reach a larger audience. Subnautica has sold millions of copies and is on multiple platforms, but started as a PC-only release. The ever-popular Rust will also make its way to the PS4 and Xbox One, although it’s unknown when or if it will come to PS5 and Xbox Series X. So, there is definitely a player base that would be interested in Valheim if it were to come to consoles.

The game is still in Early Access, so any console plans are probably on the back burner until the game officially launches. Until then, Steam players will be able to enjoy plenty of new upcoming content, try to stave off the freezing cold, and just live out a Viking-inspired fantasy. Those who are interested in a console release should make sure to encourage the developers so they know the interest is there.

About The Author

Valheimhas become a sensation amongst PC gamers. After kicking off an early access period in February, the Viking game has torn up the Steam sales charts, surging in popularity. If you've got PC pals, you've likely heard them clamoring about the game. Assuming, you're anchored to a console like Nintendo Switch or an Xbox or PlayStation, you might be wondering when the Viking game will be playable on your favorite device.

Here's everything we know about a potential Valheim console port, which sadly isn't much given what the game's developers have said about it thus far.

But first:How did gaming get you through the pandemic? We want to hear from you! Take this quick Inverse survey.

What is Valheim?

If you've been keeping your eye on PC sales reports, you might've noticed that a mysterious game called Valheimhas been rocketing to the top of the charts. Since debuting as an early access game on February 2, Valheim has attracted over three million players.

The game asks you to work alongside other players in a group of up to 10 players. You play as Vikings that have been slain in battle and your soul has been brought to purgatory. If you can defeat enough enemies, you'll be accepted into the Norse afterlife, Valhalla. The road getting there is tough. To survive, you need to forge weapons, build ships, and construct strongholds for your team.

Each map is procedurally generated, meaning no two games will be the same. The map you play on is created as you load into the game for the first time. There will be some consistency between games like certain backdrops existing in every Valheim game, but their scale and placement will be different every time.

Valheim is a game for people who like Vikings and love venturing into the unknown.

When is the Valheim release date for PS4, PS5, Xbox, and Switch?

Developer Iron Gate AB has offer two vague answers to anyone wondering about console ports. question.

The first answer comes from the Valheim FAQ. 'On which platforms will Valheim be released?' one question asks.

'Valheim will be released on Windows and Linux via Steam,' the answer reads. 'A Mac-version will be released if there is any significant demand for it. There are no plans to release on other platforms as of the time of writing but we won’t rule out console versions in the future.' To say there is at least some significant demand already is an understatement, so we could take this to mean that the developers could be actively working on console ports already. It's still very early in the game's life, so a lot could change in the coming months.

Iron Gate AB provided a similar statement to a February 16, 2021 GameSpot report about a potential console port, saying that 'everything is an option at this stage, but [there are] no plans we can confirm yet.'

It seems like a console version of Valheim isn't currently on the cards, but their answer to GameSpot's inquiry seems hopeful. All things considered, it seems like it's only a matter of time before Valheim makes its way onto consoles, but where will it land first? It seems like a perfect candidate for Xbox Game Pass or as a PS Plus monthly free title like Fall Guys once was, but it remains to be seen whether it'll be Sony or Microsoft that scoops it up first.
